Biography

Sonia joined Hackney Community Law Centre in January 2017, having previously volunteered at both South West London Law Centre and Camden Law Centre. Sonia previously worked in the public law department at a private practice firm and also at the Anti-Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit. She is a co-convenor of the Courts and Tribunal Working Group for the Immigration Law Practitioners Association. She has been an accredited Level Two Senior Caseworker under the Law Society’s Immigration and Accreditation Scheme since 2010 and a Supervisor since 2012.

Sonia has a wide experience of immigration and asylum law, specialising in judicial review matters. Her experience includes, but is not limited to, trafficking cases, applications for leave to remain in the UK, asylum claims (particularly those based on sexual orientation and gender identity) and appeals, unlawful detention cases and removal matters. Sonia travelled to Athens in October 2017 to volunteer on the Refugee Legal Support – Athens project, assisting asylum seekers in Athens. Sonia currently volunteers at Refugee Council’s destitution service approximately once a month, and also provides fortnightly supervision and guidance at a project in Islington assisting people get the “No Recourse to Public Funds” restriction lifted from their leave, and has run a wide variety of judicial reviews relating to these matters.
