Edward Cumming

Edward specialises in most areas of chancery and commercial work as part of his busy practice. Chambers and Partners (2012) recommends him as an 'up and coming' chancery junior who is "surely destined for great things" and he has been described as a "rising star" by Legal 500, which also recommends him as a leading junior for insolvency work. Having "shown himself to be 'confident, thorough and an excellent drafter of documents'", he is praised as "popular","always upbeat and technically very strong" and "very bright, upbeat and positive". Edward read Law at Downing College, Cambridge where he was President of the Cambridge Union. After leaving Cambridge he was a Thouron Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, studying at both the Law School and Wharton Business School. He then became director of a group of engineering and property management companies, acquiring a practical understanding of the commercial realities of business and, in particular, company law, before completing pupillage at XXIV Old Buildings. He frequently appears in trials before the High Court and County Courts as well as in arbitrations and has extensive experience of interlocutory hearings, petitions and other applications. He is also regularly asked to give advice, both orally and in writing, to settle pleadings and to draft other documents as part of his busy practice. Edward has twice been retained by one of the leading offshore firms for an extended period of time to advise its Guernsey business and trust law department on a variety of matters, reflecting the strong reputation of XXIV Old Buildings in offshore and trust litigation.
