The Case

A minimum term of 20 years less time spent in custody on remand was set on an application for a review under para3 of Sch22 to the in respect of an offender who had suffocated the eight month old baby of his partner with a beanbag following a campaign of violence against him. The post mortem found that the baby had suffered a skull fracture, 60 bruises, two fractured ribs, a fracture of the ulna and a substantial and horrifying injury to his gums: the upper lip having been separated from the skull.
