Sentence Mandatory life sentence. Following a recommendation by the trial judge that the appropriate tariff for retribution and deterrence was ten years, a minimum term of nine years was set on a reference pursuant to para6 of Sch22 to the in respect of an offender who had been found guilty of murdering his wife. The defendant had for 22 years treated his wife with the utmost devotion and understanding despite the emotional and financial demands she made of him.
