Before appointment to the bench, His Honour Judge Dawson was a solicitor in private practice specialising in criminal law. He was appointed District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts) in 1996 and Circuit Judge in 2010. He sits at Woolwich Crown Court.

He was a member of the Criminal Procedure Rules Committee 2008 – 2011.
