Michael is a Partner, and is the Competency Leader for Stamp Tax, at Deloitte and has an international reputation in his field. In the course of a career focused on commercial law, public law and tax, Michael has been involved in 15 stamp tax appeals in the UK and overseas. He has appeared in nine of them as counsel, including two of the three Stamp Duty Reserve Tax (“SDRT”) cases that have been taken to appeal in the UK. The third and most recent SDRT case was referred to the European Court of Justice and Michael was engaged as a technical and industry consultant by the successful appellant.

Michael leads an award winning team of ten specialists, co-located in London, as part of Deloitte’s global transaction taxes network. His clients include many of the world’s largest banks, asset managers and property companies.

Michael’s expertise is called upon from time to time by Her Majesty’s Treasury, HMRC and various professional and industry groups, including the Law Society, the Association for Financial Markets in Europe and the British Property Federation.
