Laurie is a leader in the fields of immigration, nationality and asylum. In addition to advocacy, he has participated in Council of Europe initiatives; presented policy papers at NGO, governmental and inter-governmental levels; and drafted nationality Bills and nationality amendments to Bills in passage. Laurie is co-founder of the Immigration Law Practitioners Association (ILPA).

Laurie has acted as Consultant Editor on the Halsbury's Laws titles: British Nationality; and Immigration and Asylum.
