Biography
I have been qualified as a Trading Standards Officer for 23 years and still practice as an Inspector today undertaking inspections of a whole range of equipment. Within that position I was the chairman of the EU working group on inspections and market surveillance for five years.
I also undertake a range of accreditation audits on different types of instruments in a number of countries which ensures that you keep a practical understanding of the law in this field. This covers metering and weighing and ensures that the production processes are in line with all aspects of EU law.
I act as the legal metrology consultant for the European Commission with regard to utility meters. This is especially pertinent as the market sector makes greater and greater use of smart metering technologies. This job involves monitoring standards production and ensuring the standards are in compliance with the relevant directives.
I undertake a range of training for both industry and public sectors on the requirements of the European law and the operation of the new approach directives and am the examiner for the technical aspects of the Weights and Measures legislation. I was the Consultant for the Weights and Measures title (2012) for the Fifth Edition of Halsbury's Laws of England.
I act as the technical consultant for the United Kingdom Weighing Federation (UKWF). This involves not only answering questions on the implementation of the law but also being responsible for consultations at both a UK and an EU level and actively involves lobbying on these matters.
