Defamation Act 2013 (subscription)
The Defamation Act 2013, which received Royal Assent on 25 April 2013, aims to reform the law of defamation to ensure a fair balance is struck between the right to freedom of expression and the protection of reputation. It makes a number of significant changes to the law of defamation, but is not designed to codify the law into a single statute.

Groceries Code Adjudicator Act 2013 (subscription)
Large supermarkets must abide by the Groceries Supply Code of Practice, and treat their suppliers fairly and lawfully. The Adjudicator will have the power to publicise those who breach the Code and fine such businesses. The provisions of the Act are currently intended to come into force in June.

Marine Navigation Act 2013 (subscription)
The geographical jurisdiction limit on ports police forces is removed to prevent them having to rely on the assistance of the standard police forces. In addition, general lighthouse authorities (GLAs) can operate where the UK has jurisdiction for the prevention of pollution from ships and can enter into agreements for others to use the authorities’ assets and services.

Partnerships (Prosecution) (Scotland) Act 2013 (subscription)
From 25 April 2013 the Act permits the prosecution in Scotland of partnerships, partners and others following dissolution or changes in membership, in cases where an offence has been committed by the partnership before dissolution.

Crime and Courts Act 2013 (subscription)
From 25 April 2013 the Act establishes a National Crime Agency, modernises the courts and tribunals system and the system for judicial appointments, and makes amendments relating to legal aid and the administration of justice. It also makes changes in other areas including the proceeds of crime, damages for offences by news publishers, border control, public order offences and drink and drug driving.

Succession to the Crown Act 2013 (subscription)
Significant changes to the line of succession to the Crown are to be implemented following the granting of Royal Assent on 25 April 2013 for the Succession to the Crown Bill. The gender of an individual in line to the Crown will no longer give them precedence over others, and the marrying of such a person to a Roman Catholic will not bar them from succession.

Greater London Authority (Specified Activities) Order 2013 (subscription)
SI 2013/973: Any activities involving acquisition, disposal, development and holding, and carried out by the Greater London Authority, must be done through a taxable body. The changes take effect on 20 May 2013.

Act of Sederunt (Sheriff Court Rules) (Miscellaneous Amendments) 2013 (subscription)
SSI 2013/135: Under the Summary Application Rules of the Sheriff Court system a party who has been represented by a solicitor will count as having been notified if service, or intimation, is made to the party’s solicitor from 27 May 2013. A new form of citation is also made available under the Summary Application Rules and a new form of extract decree under the Summary Cause Rules.
