Last Tuesday, members of the LexisNexis Academic team attended the LawWorks Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards at the House of Lords as sponsors for the second year. Once again the quality of the shortlisted candidates was outstanding and the judges had a really hard time picking the winners. As the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland QC, said, “Innovation, excellence and professionalism are writ large in the entries for this year’s Awards. We should remember that the entrants have combined busy academic or postgraduate studies with a fierce commitment to their pro bono work. They are an inspiration to me; I am certain they are an inspiration to everyone.”

This year’s winners were:

  • Best Contribution by a Law SchoolNorthumbria University
  • Best Contribution by an Individual Student – Natasha Latiff (University of Warwick)
  • Best Team of Students – Queen Mary, University of London
  • Best New Pro Bono Activity – University of Durham

You can find out more information about the awards on the LawWorks website and we will be uploading a video of the event to the LawCampus website in the next few weeks, so watch this space.

Getting involved in pro bono work at university can be extremely rewarding and also provide a real boost to your applications for training contracts. As we blogged earlier in the year in ‘Pro Bono is the way to go…’ most law firm HR Directors said that having pro bono work on your CV was the most desirable feature and could push you to the head of the interview queue. If you want to find out more about student Pro Bono then you can look at the Student section of the LawWorks website or the dedicated Student Pro Bono website.
