Manchester Council will investigate whether people admitted into A&E for drink-related injuries should be charged for their care. I think that this is interesting in light of the Government’s recent plans for NHS reform. While there are calls for the NHS to remain free and public, it is also true that many are abusing the system placing heavy strain on resources.
Alcohol-related A&E injuries are an easy category to address compared to drug-related A&E admissions or long term care for smoke-related illnesses or obesity-related illnesses. The underlying principle seems to be responsibility but enforcing this through charges for irresponsibility across the board will not be an easy task.
