The Case
The defendant's appeal against conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 20 November 2003 (see ). The court refused the defendant leave to appeal to the House of Lords, but certified that the following point of law of general public importance was involved in its decision: 'Can a verdict of guilty ever be considered safe if it results from a direction to convict?'
