The Case

In all the circumstances, sentences of four years' detention in a young offender institution for the second and third defendants, aged 16 and 17, who had been led into an aggravated burglary by the first defendant, would be reduced to terms of two-and-a-half years' detention. In the light of the first defendant's excellent record and character references, and to maintain some relationship with the other sentences, a sentence of seven years' imprisonment would be reduced to one of six years' imprisonment, notwithstanding that he had been the ringleader and instigator of the events in question.
