The Case
A sentence of 12 months' imprisonment imposed upon an offender who pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13 was considered, on a reference by the Attorney General to the Court of Appeal, to be unduly lenient. A sentence of two years and six months' imprisonment was substituted.
