Biography

John Clark was a senior tax editor and writer on the staff of LexisNexis Butterworths from 1995 to 2007. From 1995 he was also a member of the VAT and Duties Tribunals. In 2002 he became a Deputy Special Commissioner and a part-time Chairman of the VAT and Duties Tribunals. Following the reform of the Tribunal system which took effect in 2009, he became a part-time Tribunal Judge in the Tax Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal and a Deputy Judge of the Tax and Chancery Chamber of the Upper Tribunal, and he continues in these two roles. Before moving to Butterworths, he had for a number of years been a senior tax partner in a major city legal practice. He was a Council Member of the CIOT for fifteen years, and for two years during that period was Chairman of its Technical Committee. Subsequently, he spent some years as Chairman of its International Tax Sub-committee, and for a number of years following that, he continued his involvement on technical matters as a member of its Corporate Tax Sub-committee. Apart from spending a great deal of time in the past writing technical representations, he has written extensively on a wide range of taxation subjects.
