Lourdes Catrain


Partner and Director of the International Trade and Investment Group in Europe


Based in Brussels, Lourdes Catrain is the Director of Hogan Lovells International Trade and Investment practice in Europe. Lourdes assists corporate and government entities in economic sanctions, trade defense investigations such as anti-dumping, anti-subsidy, and safeguards, export controls, and customs. She represents clients on EU and international trade matters before the European Courts, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Hence, she has served as lead counsel in several matters before the European Commission.

Lourdes counsels clients on EU dual-use as well as economic sanctions (e.g., Iran, Syria, Russia, Ukraine) both at EU, as well as Member State level. She represents companies on matters involving customs classification, customs valuation, rules of origin, and country of origin marking and labeling.

Lourdes is a Lecturer at the University of Barcelona Master of Laws in International Economic Law and Policy (LL.M IELPO). Lourdes serves as vice-chair of the International Bar Association Trade and Customs Committee. She is on the editorial board of the Global Trade and Customs Journal (Kluwer). She is also the current chair of the trade section of the International Law Association (ILA) for Belgium. She also regularly presents on a variety of trade topics at seminars and conferences.

Prior to joining the Firm, Lourdes worked for the European Commission (EC) and occupied an in-house counsel position in a leading high-street fashion retailer in her native Spain.
