Bijal joined the Firm in 2013 as a Partner to expand and build the Tax, Tax Litigation and Investment Funds practice. Prior to that, she was Head of the Tax and Investment Funds practice, in a boutique firm, Nishith Desai Associates for 13 years. She has developed a deep understanding on private client matters and has varied experience in advising individuals and family businesses both from a legal, regulatory and tax perspective, with a special focus on cross border matters.
Bijal is highly acclaimed for her knowledge, dedication, in-depth understanding and knowledge of taxation, estate planning and structuring of funds; and for her solution oriented approach.
She is currently handling a tax information exchange case which is a first precedent case on the interpretation of treaty provisions with a country in the Channel Islands,. She has also led many successful international tax litigations in India; on the India-Mauritius Tax Treaty – Azadi Bachao Andolan, Applicability of Minimum Alternate Tax for Foreign Portfolio Investors for International Financial Associations, Taxation of Outsourcing in India for Morgan Stanley, Taxation of Online services for Dun & Bradstreet, Taxation of a Mauritius Protected Cell Company for Nicholas Applegate, to name a few.
She acted as expert witness on Indian tax law in a software tax litigation
She actively engaged in making representations and participating in consultations with the Indian Government on new tax policies and key policy issues.
She is a regular speaker at domestic and international conferences on Indian tax matters and regularly authors articles. She is regularly invited to participate on television channels as an expert on the current controversies in tax in India.
She features as a leading practitioner on Indian tax and private client matters in Chambers & Partners, Legal 500, Whos Who Legal “Corporate Tax Guide”.
Bijal serves as an officer-elect on the Individual Tax & Private Client Committee of the International Bar Association. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the International Wealth Advisors Forum, which is a global think tank for the exchange of emerging trends in estate and succession planning.
