Stuart Walsh


Stuart is head of the contentious tax team at Pinsent Masons and specialises in advising large corporates on resolving disputes with HMRC in relation to VAT and excise duties. He has extensive experience of working with large FTSE 100 clients and specialises in managing large pieces of litigation from the Tax Tribunal through to the higher courts and European Court of Justice. 

Stuart has particular expertise in managing litigation where tax avoidance is alleged by HM Revenue and Customs.  This includes litigation on the application of the abuse principle in the sphere of VAT; and litigation relating to the application of the motive test under the rules governing controlled foreign companies.

Stuart was identified in Chambers UK 2010 as "a definite rising star of note".  In Chambers UK 2011 he was rated highly by clients for his "great attention to detail". Stuart was also named among the top 40 UK tax practitioners under the age of 40 by the Tax Journal (November 2011).  Contributors noted that "he is well within his comfort zone on heavyweight cases and seemingly unflappable" and "Stuart has got it all: the knowledge, the commercial ability and, equally important, the people skills.
