Steven Thompson QC




Steven has been a barrister in practice at XXIV Old Buildings since pupillage in 1996/7. He has a commercial practice with a particular emphasis on joint venture, civil fraud, insolvency and aviation disputes.

Steven has advised and appeared in cases involving all forms of insolvency, often concerning conspiracy or fraud allegations for companies, office-holders, directors and individuals. Many of his cases involve offshore vehicles, international joint ventures or cross-border insolvency and asset recovery issues. He also has extensive experience advising on disputes concerning insolvent and impecunious airlines and aviation companies.

Steven has considerable international and offshore experience; many if not most of his cases have a cross-border or international element. He is regularly instructed in offshore matters, particularly in the BVI and in Dubai. Steven has served on the International Committee of the Bar Council of England and Wales since 2009 and he is active in the Bar China Interest Group.

Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners both rate Steven for aviation, civil fraud and insolvency work. Clients are quoted in those directories describing Steven as “erudite, tenacious, accomplished and personable”, "a perceptive lawyer, who is efficient in his arguments”, and "excellent, hard-working and very good in court."
Steven has been a member of R3 and INSOL for several years and regularly attends their conferences and events. He is a regular speaker at R3 events. He has also spoken recently on insolvency, fraud, joint venture and aviation disputes at conferences held by C5 and the Bar Council amongst others.
