Dan Smith heads up Gowling WLG’s advertising and marketing law team. He provides pragmatic, business-friendly advice across the board on advertising, branding and promotional issues. This includes advising on national and international advertising campaigns and sales promotions (strategy and clearance), advertising disputes (including comparative advertising), issues with regulators, sponsorship and naming rights, endorsement and talent agreements, advertising agency contracting, event management and media. His clients include global brand-owners, such as Coca-Cola and Unilever, global financial institutions and automotive companies, government and public-sector organisations and sports governing bodies.

Career highlights include advising on the London 2012 Olympic Games, including on the Host City Contract with the International Olympic Committee, BP’s agreement to be the official oil and gas partner, the activation of rights by sponsors including Coca-Cola, venue agreements and ambush marketing issues. Dan regularly speaks and writes on advertising and marketing and sports topics, with particular specialisms in ambush marketing and in social media.
