Martin specialises in VAT aspects of real estate and construction, working with a wide range of clients, including developers, financial institutions, corporate occupiers and universities. Martin started out in VAT Policy in Customs & Excise and was subsequently a Partner at Ernst & Young, where he headed up the VAT real estate group, and head of indirect tax at Eversheds.
He is heavily involved in the development of VAT legislation and policy, working with HMRC as technical secretary to the British Property Federation’s VAT Committee, an adviser to the British Universities’ Finance Directors’ Group and a member of HMRC’s VAT Land and Property Liaison Group. He currently serves on two HMRC/Treasury working parties.
Martin is also the author of the leading reference work on VAT and property and a regular speaker at conferences. In October 2012, he was winner in the category ‘outstanding contribution to indirect tax’ at the Indirect Tax Awards, sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
