Biography

Peter is currently Professor in Civil Law, European Private Law and Consumer Law at the University of Kassel, Germany. He graduated as a fully qualified German lawyer in 1996 and obtained his doctorate in 2001. Peter has worked in academia ever since, amongst other as a lecturer at the University of Sheffield from 2000 to 2003, as Associate Professor at the University of Bremen from 2003 to 2010 and as Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen from 2010 to 2014 when he joined the University of Kassel. He has published widely in the area of European private law with a focus on consumer law in its broadest sense, including the core areas of contract and tort law and also the law of financial services.

Peter works in a number of international research networks such as the Trento/Turin project "The Common Core of European Private Law" and the Walter van Gerven Ius Commune project. He is a board member of the International Association of Consumer Law, lead editor of the German consumer law journal Verbraucher und Recht and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Consumer Policy. He has also frequently contributed as a consumer or contract law expert to intradisciplinary conferences, for example, on services of general interest or on copyright.

Next to his academic work, Peter has acted as a consultant to the EU Commission, the EU Parliament, national ministries and consumer organisations. He was also active in training programmes in European private law for judges, prosecutors, government officials and members of civil society within the European Union and also in associated states, for example, on the Balkans.
