Simon Popplewell

Simon read law at Lincoln College, Oxford University and was called to the bar (Gray's Inn) in 2000. He was awarded the Lord Justice Holker Scholarship for his year at bar school.



Simon specialises in consumer law, particularly in the areas of consumer credit, trading standards law and the sale and supply of goods.



Simon advises on all aspects of consumer credit and consumer hire business, including the drafting and/or review of consumer credit documentation, advertising and procedures. He has represented licensees before both the Office of Fair Trading and the Consumer Credit Appeals Tribunal in respect of consumer credit licensing matters, and regularly gives advice in this area. Simon often appears in court on behalf of lenders, in cases ranging from the supply of defective goods sold on finance to substantive challenges to the enforceability of consumer credit agreements for alleged non compliance with the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
In the wide ranging area of trading standards Simon acts for both enforcement authorities and businesses. His work includes both prosecuting and defending criminal proceedings, and both making and resisting civil applications for enforcement orders under Part 8 of the Enterprise Act 2002, including committal proceedings for breach of such orders.



Simon regularly appears in court in and advises on matters concerning of the sale and supply of goods, including unfair contract terms, distance selling and issues of satisfactory quality and fitness for purpose. He both drafts and reviews standard contract terms and business procedures.



Simon is a contributor to Atkin's Court Forms in the area of Consumer Protection, he annotated the Consumer Credit Act 2006 for Current Law and, together with other members of chambers, he is a co-author of the Law of Consumer Credit and Hire. Simon is ranked as a leading junior in the area of consumer law by Chambers and Partners.
