Stewart is a partner in CW Energy LLP and was a founding member of CW Energy in 1990. He has worked on oil and gas taxation matters for over 30 years.
He joined Arthur Young in 1973 from Bristol University, and qualified as a chartered accountant with them in 1976. On qualification he transferred to the corporate tax department where he dealt with a wide range of companies in a variety of industries in both the UK and overseas, including those in the oil and gas sector.
Stewart has experience of working with a wide range of clients, from small privately-owned companies up to quoted multinationals, but has concentrated mainly on the oil and gas sector for the last 30 years, He has considerable experience of acquisitions and disposals, both corporate and asset based, restructuring and financing. His expertise covers petroleum revenue tax (PRT), ring fence corporation tax, and supplementary charge (SCT).
In the past Stewart spent a year in industry in the tax department of BICC, and has also worked on secondment to the tax department of a major international oil company for several months.
Stewart has been a member and the secretary of the Oil Taxation Action Committee (OTAC) since its formation in 1991, and has been involved in the many representations that that group has made to HMRC and Treasury over the years.
Stewart regularly lectures on courses, in particular on oil and gas issues, and contributes articles on this subject to various publication on a regular basis. Stewart is responsible for the chapter â€˜Group Aspects of Tax Planningâ€™ for the Tolleyâ€™s Tax Planning annual publication, and also the oil taxation section of the CCH Tax reporter.
