Helen Milgate studied law at Nottingham University where she graduated at the top of her year, gaining a first class degree. She then obtained a Masters Degree in Law at the University of Pennsylvania, having been awarded a Thouron Scholarship to fund her studies. At Penn she wrote a thesis on `The Duty of Fair Representation in American Labour Law' and was fortunate to be supervised by Professor Clyde Summers.
Returning to England, she qualified and practiced as a solicitor with Herbert Smith Freehills before being appointed a Fellow and Director of Studies in Law at New Hall (now Murray Edwards College) Cambridge. Whilst at Cambridge one of her main academic interests was employment law.
After a career break to have her children she set up the Professional Support service in the employment law department at Pinsent Masons, then headed by John McMullen. Her role at Pinsent Masons included drafting the departmentâ??s precedents and writing client bulletins, as well as helping to research complex points of employment law.
She was appointed as a fee-paid Employment Judge in 2004 and now sits as a salaried Employment Judge in the East Midlands region.
