Julian Milford




Julian Milford main areas of practice are employment law and public law. He regularly acts for both claimants and respondents in a wide range of employment tribunal disputes, where his clients include major national and international companies, banks, local authorities, police forces, unions, and healthcare providers. He has appeared before the High Court, the Employment Appeal Tribunal and the Court of Appeal on behalf of clients in employment cases. Julian also undertakes advisory and judicial review work in the field of public law, and appears in freedom of information cases in the First-Tier and Upper Tribunal. Julianâ??s recent and current cases include the following:

Employment law

  • A number of large-scale equal pay employment tribunal claims including Hartley v Northumbria Healthcare and ors (test claim for the validity of Agenda for Change, the pay settlement for the whole of the NHS). Julian has extensive experience in equal pay claims, and has been instructed both by individuals and on behalf of many local authorities, NHS Trusts, non-departmental public bodies, and large outsourcing companies.
  • Complex discrimination/whistleblowing Tribunal claims.
  • A claim in which he obtained the then highest ever employment tribunal award on behalf of a client under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
  • Litigation about the compatibility of a major airlineâ??s PHI schemes with age discrimination legislation.
  • Test cases on the exemption from the National Minimum Wage for live-in domestic workers, heard in the EAT and Court of Appeal.
  • A large-scale local authority collective redundancy claim involving several hundred employees, due to be heard by the Employment Tribunal in Autumn 2012.
  • Restrictive covenant proceedings in the Queenâ??s Bench and Chancery Divisions of the High Court involving partnership and employment disputes.
