Richard Martin

Richard was an employment law partner at Gouldens/Jones Day before joining Speechly Bircham, where he ran the large employment team and sat on the firmâ??s management board. In 2011, apparently out of the blue, he suffered panic attacks, severe anxiety and depression, resulting in his being hospitalised. He now works with organisations to help promote awareness of mental health and wellbeing, to break the stigma and to create healthier workplaces which are kinder, fairer and more productive.

Richard sits on the steering committee of the Lord Mayorâ??s This Is Me In The City campaign which encourages organisations to help people speak about their mental health problems and so break the stigma. He has studied counselling and psychotherapy and is a Mental Health First Aid trainer. He writes extensively on the subject, is regularly asked to speak at events and is working with Lexis Nexis to develop a framework to help employers and managers think about how to promote positive wellbeing and support those who are experiencing difficulties.
