Richard Banwell

Richard Banwell specialises in environmental and planning law. Called to the Bar in 1998, he joined Six Pump Court as a pupil from a career as an in-house legal adviser with the Environment Agency’s Head Office legal team, which included a nine month secondment as a regional prosecutor.

He advises utilities, developers, and regulators in connection with each regime and has particular experience where the two intersect and on the European dimension of environmental regulation. He has recently conducted cases both for and against the regulator in the High Court and Court of Appeal in areas concerning renewable energy and waste treatment schemes, hazardous, clinical and radioactive waste disposal sites as well as cases concerning the transfrontier shipment of waste, water resources management and permitting offences.
