Jat Bains


Jat Bains is head of the Macfarlanes Restructuring & Insolvency practice and specialises in a range of debt finance transactions, acting for corporate clients, sponsors, turnaround investors, bondholders and senior and mezzanine lenders in relation to, amongst other things, workouts and restructurings.

Jat’s restructuring experience includes a secondment to the restructuring group legal team at RBS, where he was involved in the $12bn restructuring of an international financial institution. Jat is a member of the Institute for Turnaround, to which he has contributed articles and presented on the law. He is also a member of R3 and the Insolvency Lawyers’ Association.

Jat has advised clients in a variety of sectors including professional services, where he has advised Slater + Gordon in relation to its recent refinancing, a senior lender in relation to the distressed refinancings of a national law firm and an FCA regulated financial advisor, and a second lien lender in relation to the collapse of Parabis. Other sectors in which he has significant experience include hotels and leisure, real estate and infrastructure, consumer lending and retail.

Jat’s international finance experience includes a secondment to the offices of a law firm in Milan, where he assisted with a securitisation and refinancing relating to a major Italian airport company. Jat has recently advised on restructuring transactions in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy and Kenya.
