Nicholas Gibson

Nicholas is a barrister at Matrix Chambers. He has experience of diverse commercial and public law matters, with a focus on competition, telecoms and other economic regulation, procurement and general EU law, consumer credit and other consumer protection legislation, and human rights. Nicholas was appointed to the Attorney General's Panel of Counsel in 2012. Before moving to Matrix in 2009, Nicholas worked for over seven years at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, specialising in competition, commercial, EU and public law. Nicholas also worked for a year as Judicial Assistant to Lord Bingham and Lord Walker at the House of Lords.

Nicholas has been instructed in appeals against four of Ofcom's charge control statements under the Communications Act 2003, including in Everything Everywhere v Ofcom [2012] CAT 11 (standards of review applicable under the 2003 Act and related EU legislation). Other cases include R (Global Knafaim Leasing) v the CAA and BAA (2010) EWHC 1348 (Admin) (commercial judicial review on human rights and competition law grounds arising from detention of aeroplane) and SanDisk Corpn v Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV and others (2007) EWHC 332 (Ch) (application of the 'Brussels' Regulation 44/2001/EC in competition law matters).

Nicholas has lectured and writes regularly on matters within his expertise, including as visiting lecturer at King's College, London, and as contributor to Bellamy & Child: EU Law of Competition (7th edition), the Cambridge Law Journal and the European Human Rights Law Review.
