Richard Armitage




Richard joined Simmons & Simmons in 1980 and became a partner in 1987 before retiring in 2016. He spent two years in the Brussels office from 1982. From 1999 to 2003 he was the managing partner of the commercial department in London and in February 2007 he moved to the Madrid office as its managing partner where he handled the merger with a Spanish law firm, returning to London in 2009. Richard was the partner leading the Projects team in the firm’s Bristol office. Richard has had extensive experience of the defence sector since first acting for the Ministry of Defence in 1986 on the contractorisation of the Royal Dockyards. Since then he has advised on numerous major defence transactions, including outsourcings, privatisations and PFI/PPP projects, many of which have led to various awards for the firm and/or the project.

Richard's other clients in the UK public sector include the Cabinet Office and the Department for Communities & Local Government. He has also acted for a number of foreign government-owned bodies and a leading UK university.
